Last month I finally dove in and updated our Master Bedroom. In all of it’s 12’x10′ glory, our Master is anything but luxurious. However, it boasts two closets (3′ each!), so I don’t need to share with my hubby, and it gets the most wonderful morning sun – which means no alarm clock needed for me.
We’ve made the most of the space as best as we could on a limited budget, but it was time for an update. It didn’t feel like “me”. Anyone else have a feeling they want invoked when they enter a room? Well, my little Master bedroom has always lacked that vibe, so I decided it was time. I had saved up a smidge of my spending money, and hosted an Instagram Tag Sale, where I sold off a handful of home decor and personal items – a great way to get some extra cash.
Here’s what we sold:
- 2 IKEA dressers
- 3 lamps
- a large mirror
- a glass bookshelf
- Jeff’s Fossil watch
So armed with $800, I went into design mode. Here’s how the $800 was spent:
- IKEA dresser
- black throw pillows
- full length mirror
- picture ledge
- 4 framed pictures
- IKEA side table
- 1 piece of art
- fiddle leaf fig tree
- 2 wall sconces
- decorative basket
- curtain panels
- plant pot for a real plant (plant yet to be purchased)
The day started out like this:
The blackout roller shades came with the house, and although they aren’t the prettiest thing to look at, they work great, so I can’t be bothered to update them. (I could do without the popcorn ceiling though!)
The wall above the headboard was wallpapered 7 years ago. Instead of stripping the wallpaper, we opted to prime and paint over it instead. We had seen this done by painters in a dance studio I had designed, and the simplicity combined with the end result sold us.
By 8am, the room looked like this.
The walls were painted Benjamin Moore Simply White in an eggshell finish, and the accent wall above the headboard went Sherwin Williams Iron Ore in a flat finish. The trim and casings had all been painted Simply White two years ago when we did our house renovation. I love the idea of monochromatic trim, casings and walls…
A few hours later, and voila! The mini makeover was complete!
One of my favourite things about this makeover are two of my favourite items that I was finally able to pull out of storage and put to use. The first is an Eileen Grey side table, and the second is a vintage lamp I purchased a number of years ago on an online thrift store.
I posted on Instagram asking for input on the type of art to include in the room. I received a number of amazing ideas! The one that struck me the most (and worked best with my budget) was to select meaningful art pieces. Jeff and I love New York, and dream about traveling abroad one day. I found a modern painting of NYC, and some framed maps of the world. We also found an old family photo, taken 10 years ago, and framed it as well.
