Mending a Broken Heart

Marisa Anderson Avatar

Uugh the pain of heartbreak. You know what I mean. That place where nothing can seem to heal or mend the ache deep in your soul. I’m not sure if the hairline fracture is any easier to cope with than the shattering break of your heart that feels like a million little pieces need to be picked up and somehow put back together. Both cut deep. Both require healing.

Even though you attempt to go on with “life as usual”, you carry it around with you. Even when there’s a smile on your face, you feel that gut-wrenching pain inside.

At some point in our lives, we’ll all experience heartbreak. A relationship gone wrong, the mistrust of a friend, the abuse of a parent… even with the best of intentions we wind up getting hurt. It’s what happens when we share life with people. (I’ve not heard of someone getting heartbroken while secluded, alone and away from all human interaction.)

If you’re heartbroken, this post is for you. To be overly simple, there are two ways you can rebuild after the pain of heartbreak.

1. Build up walls and keep everyone at a safe distance

Sadly, the first approach is what comes naturally to us. After all, walls keep us guarded and safe. Or do they?

Not letting anyone close to you can’t be compartmentalized. If you put up walls to “stay safe”, you’re actually keeping people away from life-giving human interaction we were all created to enjoy.

People at a safe distance can’t really encourage, support, love and care for you… they can try, but they are really only encouraging, supporting, loving and caring for the you that you allow them to see. That doesn’t meet the genuine, deep-rooted need in your life for love from others.

2. Love

The Bible tells us that love covers a multitude of sins. Your sins. My sins. Remember this first and foremost. Christ’s love for you covered all of your sins. If we could see how deeply we are loved, how fully we are forgiven and how completely we are made new in Christ, we would be empowered to reflect the same love to others.

That kind of love can cover a multitude of sins committed against us as well. We can’t just receive that love for ourselves and then direct judgement and hatred towards those who hurt us.

Matthew 6:14-15 (NLTSB)
“If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Receiving Christ’s love empowers you to extend Christ’s love. By forgiving and reflecting His love, you free yourself from the damaging effects of heartbreak.

Don’t allow the pain of heartbreak to rob you of the life and love that come from healthy relationships. Receive the love of Jesus and choose pass it on.
