Imagination is Everything

“Your imagination is everything. It is simply the preview of life’s coming attractions.” – Albert Einstein

In an earlier post entitled What Running a Marathon, Interior Design and Leading Worship Have in Common, I shared four steps to develop your dreams. (Check out the follow up posts for Step 1: What are You Dreaming? and Step 2: Dream Intentionally).

Step 3: Value dreaming by adding it to your daily routine.

I’m a firm believer in proactively controlling your thought life. Choose what to dream about. Choose what thoughts you’ll allow to linger and which ones you need to get out immediately! Beyond that, schedule time each day to quiet yourself for the sole purpose of dreaming. It doesn’t need to be a long time – it just needs to be focused and intentional.

I start my day off each morning by dreaming intentionally. I imagine different aspects of my life, and dream of where I want them to be in 5, 10, 20 years from now.
I have been faced with my weaknesses as I dream about the type of leader I want to be. The Holy Spirit begins to speak through these intentional dreaming times and shows me the obstacles within myself standing in the way from becoming the person that I imagine myself being.

It’s amazing what inspiration you will find if you just take the time to dream!

Terri Saville Foy has some great books whose central theme is dreaming. Her book, Imagine Big, is full of practical tips for intentionally dreaming and preparing for the future God has for you. One of my favourite sayings of hers is, “Your life will move in the direction of your most dominant thoughts.”

Genesis 11:6 (AMP) And the Lord said, Behold, they are one people and they have all one language; and this is only the beginning of what they will do, and now nothing they have imagined they can do will be impossible for them.

What is at the forefront of your thought life? Is that the direction you want your life to be heading? Why not take 5 minutes every day to begin the habit of dreaming intentionally? It may be 5 of the most impacting minutes of your day.

I’d love to hear your experiences! Please comment and share how dreaming has impacted your life!
