“Dreaming is the language of the Holy Spirit.” – Yonggi Cho
In an earlier post entitled What Running a Marathon, Interior Design and Leading Worship Have in Common, I shared how important it is to dream intentionally. Knowing what you’re dreaming and being purposeful is an essential part of pursuing the plan of God for your life.
Step 2: Be aware when your dreaming is most active and guard that time.
When I started being purposeful to determine when this was for me, I realized two things. First, at those times when my mind is most active, I must be intentional in leading my thoughts. Throughout the day when I find myself imagining and dreaming, it’s often related to something I’m currently working on, or helping someone else work through. But in the morning when I have just woken up, or in some cases, I haven’t fully woken up yet, there’s nothing specific on my mind to direct those dreams. I must grab onto the thoughts that will fuel a vision in my heart and discard ones that are contrary to the will of God. This sets the course of my day. If I allow myself to dream into things that are appealing to my flesh, I start my day in opposition to the plan of God. However, if I direct my mind to the things the Lord is speaking to me and dream along those things, before my feet even hit the ground I am filled with inspiration and anticipation in my spirit at what God will do.
Romans 8:5,6 (ESV)
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
The second thing I realized was that in these early morning dreaming sessions, is when the Lord speaks to me the most. Yes, I hear from Him when I am having my daily devotion time, or when I am driving in my car, or at unexpected times throughout my day, but the most consistent and clear time I hear the Lord speak to me is in the early morning when my eyes haven’t even opened yet and I am dreaming about things He has previously put on my heart. Had I not taken the time to discover when my mind was most active in imagining and dreaming, I would have missed out on these precious times that the Lord drops something into my heart.
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the moments throughout your day when the Lord is dropping a new thought or dream into your spirit, so that you can be increasingly aware of the ways in which He speaks to you. He loves you deeply and wants to speak hope and life into your heart as you go about your day.
Happy dreaming everyone!
